Developed VR autostereo 3D display support for the RBVI/ChimeraX repository, enabling glasses-free 3D XR experiences through the vrto3d SteamVR driver. The work focused on implementing direct coordinate mapping for per-eye rendering and mouse interaction, ensuring accurate alignment between virtual and physical displays. Expanded hardware compatibility by recognizing Samsung Odyssey 3D displays and refining OpenXR detection to handle vrto3d as a non-headset device. Addressed stability and input issues related to VR cursor handling, particularly for older builds. Utilized Python and 3D graphics expertise to consolidate XR code paths, improving maintainability and broadening immersive visualization capabilities in ChimeraX.
February 2026 (RBVI/ChimeraX): Delivered VR autostereo 3D display support via the vrto3d SteamVR driver to ChimeraX, enabling glasses-free 3D XR experiences. Implemented direct coordinate mapping for per-eye renders and mouse interaction, and expanded hardware compatibility by recognizing Samsung Odyssey 3D displays. Fixed stability and input issues related to VR cursor handling and older builds. The work reduces setup friction, broadens XR capabilities, and improves rendering accuracy for immersive visualization.
