During November 2024, Yifeng Zhao developed an instance-level consumer directory usage metric for the apache/pinot repository, focusing on enhancing real-time data ingestion observability. He implemented a Java gauge within ServerGauge.java and integrated supporting logic in BaseServerStarter.java to calculate and report the total size of consumer directories. This addition enables more granular monitoring of disk space usage, supporting proactive capacity planning and alerting for Pinot’s real-time processing infrastructure. Leveraging backend development and monitoring skills, Yifeng’s work addressed a key operational need by exposing critical storage metrics, thereby improving the maintainability and reliability of real-time data pipelines in production environments.
