During December 2024, Sam Morris developed robust spectral object handling features for the sdss/sdssdb repository, focusing on encoding and decoding SpecObjIDs and enhancing the primary spectral classification workflow. Leveraging SQL and stored procedures, Sam refactored the update_specprimary logic for clarity, introduced temporary columns for intermediate calculations, and improved transaction and error handling to strengthen data integrity. The work included building SQL functions to manage spectral object metadata, enabling more accurate classifications and streamlined maintenance. By emphasizing data modeling and database development, Sam’s contributions provided a more reliable and auditable foundation for downstream analytics and ongoing spectral data management.
