In April 2025, Alex Evans contributed to the ziglang/zig repository by implementing Windows support for the if_nametoindex function within Zig’s standard networking library. This work focused on enhancing cross-platform networking parity, allowing developers to retrieve network interface indices by name on Windows in a manner consistent with POSIX systems. Using Zig and leveraging skills in cross-platform and system programming, Alex reduced platform-specific discrepancies and streamlined the networking API surface. The feature addressed a common developer pain point, improving productivity and code portability. The depth of the work lay in aligning Windows networking behavior with established standards, ensuring consistent developer experience.
