Alex English developed robust deployment automation and user-focused features across multiple Hack for LA repositories over three months. For hackforla/peopledepot and hackforla/VRMS, Alex engineered AWS deployment pipelines using Docker, GitHub Actions, and OIDC-based credentials, automating ECS deployments and standardizing environment tagging to improve release traceability and security. In hackforla/tdm-calculator, Alex implemented a per-user project hiding feature by designing a new ProjectHidden table and updating stored procedures, while also enhancing the testing infrastructure with Babel and Jest. Alex’s work demonstrated depth in DevOps, database design, and JavaScript, resulting in more reliable releases and maintainable, user-centric application logic.

August 2025: VRMS deployment pipeline enhancements delivered to boost security, automation, and release traceability. Key work focused on AWS deployment workflow improvements (OIDC-based credentials and automatic ECS redeploy) and environment tagging consistency (app-name-based environment tags and input-environment included in Docker image tags). No major bugs fixed this month; efforts concentrated on robust deployment configuration and governance. These changes reduce manual toil, increase reliability of releases, and improve traceability across environments. Technologies demonstrated include AWS ECS, OIDC, Docker tagging, and CI/CD automation.

April 2025: Implemented user-specific project hiding and tightened testing infrastructure for hackforla/tdm-calculator. Key contributions include a per-user visibility model via a new ProjectHidden table and updated stored procedures, plus Babel/Jest-based test improvements to boost reliability and reduce flaky tests.

February 2025: Delivered an automated AWS deployment CI/CD workflow and Docker-based deployment for the development environment of hackforla/peopledepot. Implemented a GitHub Actions workflow with AWS credentials handling, ECR login, Docker image build/push, and ECS service update; added a Dockerfile for AWS deployment and an entrypoint script to run migrations during deployment. This work reduces manual setup, enables reproducible dev environments, and accelerates release cycles.
