Ats Uiboupin developed HTTP OTLP export support for Node.js autoinstrumentation in the grafana/opentelemetry-operator repository. This feature enabled trace data to be exported over HTTP using the OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_PROTOCOL environment variable, supporting both http/json and http/protobuf protocols alongside the default gRPC. Ats implemented the solution using TypeScript and YAML, focusing on environment-driven configuration and seamless integration with OpenTelemetry tracing pipelines. The work expanded compatibility with various OTLP backends and reduced integration friction for Node.js users. While the contribution was focused on a single feature, it demonstrated depth in protocol handling and practical application of observability best practices.
