February 2026 (prometheus/prometheus): Delivered platform stability and maintainability improvements alongside observability upgrades. Executed Go and npm dependency upgrades, security hardening, CI/tooling improvements, lint adjustments, and build/test cleanup to reduce toil and accelerate development. Upgraded core tooling (Go 1.26.0, golangci-lint v2.9.0) and tightened lint rules. Advanced Prometheus observability with a 3.10 rc0 upgrade, introduction of an OpenAPI spec, and targeted fixes for concurrency race conditions in Head.deleteSeriesByID, backed by unit tests and test adjustments. Result: more reliable releases, faster feedback loops, and stronger developer experience.

January 2026 focused on end-to-end stale time series data management in Prometheus TSDB, delivering garbage collection and compaction workflows, robust lifecycle handling during WAL replay, and comprehensive testing with configurable thresholds to optimize storage and data integrity. This work enhances reliability and storage efficiency for stale data while enabling tunable behavior for production deployments.

In August 2025, delivered two critical features to improve the accuracy and reliability of stale-series management in grafana/prometheus. Implemented restoration of stale series counting during WAL replay and restored stale-series counting from chunk snapshots, stabilizing the overall stale data accounting across input pipelines and storage layers. These changes reduce the risk of miscounted stale data, improve reliability of alerts and dashboards, and support more predictable storage and retention policies.

July 2025 monthly summary for grafana/prometheus: Focused on stale-series tracking and garbage-collection enhancements in the Head component. Delivered a feature to track stale series, added metrics for stale data, adjusted GC to account for stale data, and implemented tests to validate counting and GC behavior. No major bugs fixed in this period for this repo; emphasis on feature delivery, test coverage, and observability.
