In May 2026, the Reader data layer was migrated to React Query across all core streams, delivering faster data fetches, consistent caching, and real-time updates. A StreamV2 UI layer was introduced, with per-stream query params and robust pagination, replacing the Redux-based path and enabling more scalable stream handling. Cross-post navigation was hardened by introducing a globalId identity system and ensuring navigation links point to the original posts, improving UX and navigation reliability. Performance and UX improvements were implemented, including refined cache keys, controlled stale times, reduced skeleton flashes, and deduped stream data, resulting in smoother user experiences and lower network overhead. In Jetpack, a no-op newsletter category save was corrected to be treated as a success, eliminating erroneous 400 errors. These efforts increased data reliability, reduced latency, and positioned the team to scale streams more effectively, using modern React Query patterns, api-core integrations, and comprehensive testing across repos.

April 2026 performance and delivery highlights focused on modernizing the Reader data layer, delivering critical UX improvements, and strengthening content visibility controls. In wp-calypso, key work centered on (1) commenting UX improvements with a login-required message and a centralized isCommentsOpen flow, ensuring users see the correct guidance and that the system prioritizes a “Comments closed” state when appropriate; (2) a sweeping migration of Reader data fetching from Redux to React Query across domains (lists, items, posts, related content, thumbnails, organizations, teams, and tags), removing legacy Redux code, adding optimistic updates, introducing HOCs, and updating documentation; (3) continued expansion of React Query-driven migrations across Reader features (read-lists, read-tags, read-organizations, read-teams, thumbnails, related posts, and related mutation flows) with cache-informed mutations, improved error handling, and extensive test/docs updates; (4) improved mutation patterns and query invalidation by parameterizing mutations with the consuming QueryClient and refining invalidation strategies to reduce stale UI and improve user-perceived performance; (5) documentation improvements (AGENTS.md, README/route tables) to capture migration patterns, boundaries, and usage for future work. In Automattic/jetpack, we added a Post API Password Protection Indicator by introducing a has_password field in the post API response, enabling the WordPress.com Reader to detect password-protected posts irrespective of user permissions, along with changelog entries and tests.
