Worked on enhancing observability for the DataDog/saluki repository by implementing a feature to track bytes received during OTLP gRPC exports. This involved modifying the GrpcServiceImpl to accept a metrics parameter and updating service methods to increment the bytes-received metric for metrics, logs, and traces. The work leveraged Rust and focused on asynchronous programming and backend development, with an emphasis on gRPC and metrics tracking. By enabling accurate accounting of payload sizes, the changes improved the reliability and performance monitoring of the OTLP export pipeline, supporting better troubleshooting and capacity planning for observability data flows within the system.
