In February 2025, Joe D’Amato contributed to the netdata/libbpf repository by developing a targeted observability enhancement for AF_XDP within the kernel’s netdev-genl interface. He implemented a per-queue xsk attribute, making AF_XDP usage visible only for queues actively utilizing this technology, which improves monitoring and prepares the groundwork for future XSK data exposure. The work involved updating netdev.h to define the new attribute, ensuring alignment between the kernel interface and the feature. Leveraging his expertise in kernel development, networking, and C, Joe delivered a focused, well-scoped feature that deepens AF_XDP visibility without introducing unnecessary complexity or overhead.
