January 2026 (PaddleX): Implemented vertical text detection in OCR word box calculations and refactored the codebase to support both horizontal and vertical text orientations. The updated word box generation now correctly aligns with text orientation, improving OCR accuracy for vertical languages and strengthening downstream recognition. This work lays groundwork for broader multilingual and layout-aware OCR capabilities and reduces downstream corrections.
