Lorenzo worked on the Fantom-foundation/Tosca repository, delivering eight features over two months focused on modernizing and optimizing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) runtime. He refactored the interpreter core, removed legacy EVM revisions, and defaulted execution to Istanbul, simplifying gas management and improving reliability. Using Rust and C, he enhanced performance through memory reuse, optimized 256-bit arithmetic, and integrated safer big-integer operations. Lorenzo also stabilized the EVM runtime API, improved FFI resource management, and modernized build tooling for cross-platform deployment. His work deepened the codebase’s maintainability, increased throughput, and provided clearer profiling and documentation for ongoing development.

December 2024 Tosca: Delivered major EVM performance and safety improvements, modernized build/tooling, and enhanced profiling/documentation. The work focused on increasing EVM throughput and memory efficiency, strengthening API stability, and enabling safer cross-platform deployment. Business value includes lower runtime costs, better scalability, and a maintainable codebase with clearer profiling guidance and cross-platform readiness.

November 2024 Tosca delivered substantial EVM modernization and interpreter improvements that reduce risk, improve performance, and accelerate development cycles. Key initiatives include removing legacy EVM revisions and defaulting to Istanbul with simplified gas capping, a broad set of interpreter core enhancements (including logging, tail-call optimization, dynamic stack, and improved u256 handling), and expanded Rust-based testing, benchmarks, and CI capabilities with fuzzing and sanitizer checks. Together with memory-leak/UB remediation and a regression fix, these efforts result in a more reliable, higher-performance execution environment and faster, safer release cycles.
