During September 2024, Michael Bockenhauer developed a new configuration option for the dev-sec/ansible-collection-hardening repository, enabling password-based authentication for SFTP. He approached the task by introducing a configurable knob, allowing users to toggle password-based login while maintaining the default security posture. This addition broadened authentication support, making the system more adaptable for environments reliant on legacy password methods. Michael utilized Ansible for configuration management, leveraging Jinja and YAML to implement the feature cleanly and safely. The work demonstrated a focused, well-scoped engineering effort, addressing interoperability needs without compromising security or maintainability, and required no bug fixes during the period.
