Worked on the zed-industries/zed repository to enhance terminal rendering for complex scripts, focusing on correct placement of combining marks such as vowel signs and tone marks. Addressed a bug where these marks were incorrectly displaced to adjacent cells, ensuring they now render on their base characters across scripts like Thai, Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari, Myanmar, and Khmer. Consolidated force-width logic into a shared Rust helper to enable script-agnostic rendering and reduce maintenance risk. Expanded unit test coverage and added end-to-end validation scripts, emphasizing internationalization, visual fidelity, and performance stability in terminal development with minimal overhead. No new features shipped.
April 2026: Major improvements in terminal text shaping for complex scripts. Fixed incorrect displacement of combining marks to adjacent cells; now they render on base characters across Thai, Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari, Myanmar, Khmer, and others. Consolidated force-width logic, refactored into a single shared helper to reduce maintenance and race conditions. Expanded unit test coverage with scenarios for Latin position stability, anchored combining marks, and proper progression after base characters; added end-to-end validation scripts for Thai, Lao, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Myanmar, and Khmer. Release notes updated to reflect cross-script rendering improvements. These changes enhance internationalization support, visual fidelity, and performance stability with minimal overhead.
