Developed FireworksAI chat completion support within the elastic/elasticsearch repository, expanding the inference service to handle chat tasks alongside text embeddings. The work involved designing a unified streaming channel compatible with OpenAI’s chat completions endpoint, implementing new chat completion models, service and task settings, and unified request classes. Comprehensive unit and integration tests were created in Java to ensure reliability, including wire serialization and parameterized parsing. Quality improvements addressed code style, JSON assertion consistency, and transport version conflicts. The enhancements broadened AI task coverage, improved maintainability, and facilitated onboarding by updating documentation and changelogs, leveraging skills in API integration and backend development.
