Worked on the canva/opentelemetry-collector-contrib repository to enhance the Kafka receiver with rack-aware processing, addressing the needs of multi-rack deployments and reducing cross-datacenter latency. Developed a rack_id configuration option, enabling more efficient replica selection within distributed systems. Integrated this feature with both Sarama and franz-go Kafka clients to ensure consistent behavior across implementations. Updated project documentation to guide users on the new configuration and its benefits. The work focused on configuration management and distributed systems, leveraging Go for implementation. All changes were traceable through a dedicated commit and pull request, supporting maintainability and ease of review for future development.
