Developed a real-time Live Battle Overlay for the openfrontio/OpenFrontIO repository, enabling players to view live attacker and defender troop counts directly on active front lines within the map interface. Leveraging TypeScript and front end development skills, the solution introduced a tick-based label system updating every 200 milliseconds, with color cues to indicate combat advantage and automatic hiding during Terrain view. The overlay included a user-configurable settings toggle and was delivered with comprehensive UI tests, en.json translations, and supporting screenshots. This feature enhanced situational awareness and reduced context-switching for players, aligning with product goals to improve live battle engagement and usability.
Month: 2026-03 | OpenFrontIO repository: openfrontio/OpenFrontIO. Delivered a real-time Live Battle Overlay on Front Lines, enabling players to see live attacker vs defender troop counts directly on active front lines within the map view. This reduces cognitive load, speeds strategic assessment, and enhances engagement during conflicts. Implemented a 200ms tick-based label system that tracks moving front lines, with color cues (amber for attacker disadvantage, green for advantage, red for severe disadvantage) and automatic hiding during Terrain view, plus cleanup when an attack ends. Added a Settings toggle for the overlay (enabled by default) to give players control over visibility. The work is delivered via commit 015e3c7d199fdcbf29363258359ba8bea5671ff3 (feat: Attacking Troops Overlay (#3427)), which introduces the AttackingTroopsOverlay component and related UI updates. Included are UI tests, en.json translations, and screenshots for all UI changes to support QA and accessibility. This feature aligns with product goals to improve situational awareness and reduce context-switching for players in live battles.
