In December 2024, Maharup worked on the opensearch-project/sql repository, focusing on simplifying the data querying stack by removing the legacy Spark SQL integration. He deprecated and deleted the spark-sql-application module, including all related tests and configurations, to streamline the codebase and reduce ongoing maintenance. Using Scala, Java, and sbt build tooling, Maharup ensured the removal process was thorough and aligned with the project’s roadmap to consolidate query pathways. This work resulted in a leaner, more maintainable system, improved onboarding for new contributors, and enhanced overall stability by eliminating outdated Spark-based data querying functionality from the project.
