Developed SMBPROFILE-based observability for Ceph-backed SMB operations in the redox-os/samba repository, focusing on profiling asynchronous I/O paths within Samba’s VFS Ceph module. The work involved implementing detailed profiling for non-blocking read, write, and fsync operations by introducing new timing and state management structures, along with helper functions that integrate seamlessly with the existing profiling framework. Using C and leveraging expertise in asynchronous I/O, file system VFS, and performance profiling, this contribution enhanced end-to-end visibility into I/O performance. The resulting metrics enable data-driven analysis and facilitate faster identification and resolution of bottlenecks in Ceph-backed SMB environments.
January 2025: Delivered SMBPROFILE-based observability for Ceph-backed SMB operations in Samba (VFS Ceph). Implemented profiling for asynchronous read, write, and fsync paths, with new timing/state management structures and helpers that integrate with the existing profiling framework to provide actionable performance metrics.
