Worked on the eclipse-openj9/openj9 repository to enhance memory management stability by addressing issues in the Balanced garbage collector. Focused on restoring previous garbage collection behavior by reverting the off-heap memory default and removing the virtualLargeObjectHeap member, ensuring that historical GC semantics were maintained. Updated the logic for requesting and enabling virtual large object heaps to minimize user-facing impact and reduce risk from recent changes. Utilized C++ and system programming expertise to deliver a stable solution that corrected a regression without introducing new features. The work demonstrated careful attention to backward compatibility and the intricacies of garbage collection mechanisms.
