Worked on the buildkite/agent-stack-k8s repository to deliver a feature enabling Safe-to-Evict annotation overrides for spot and preemptible nodes in Kubernetes environments. Addressed the challenge of cluster autoscaler behavior by adjusting the metadata merge order, allowing annotation overrides through DefaultMetadata or plugin annotations. This change restored the ability to start jobs on cost-efficient nodes without autoscaler interference, improving scheduling reliability. The work involved backend development using Go and required a deep understanding of Kubernetes resource management. Collaboration and documentation were emphasized to ensure clear ownership and comprehensive test coverage, supporting maintainability and transparency for future contributors and users.
