
Worked on the truenas/middleware repository to deliver two major features enhancing reliability for large NVMe pools and enabling next-generation hardware support. Focused on backend development and system programming, the work included tuning disk resizing timeouts and adding middleware support for NTG V-Series hardware with high-availability interconnects. Used Python and shell scripting to implement robust validation, including multi-phase testing and soak runs, ensuring stable failover and no regressions. In a subsequent release, addressed firmware limitations in JBOF shelf attachment by introducing middleware-only retry and recovery logic, improving provisioning reliability and reducing manual intervention in production environments through asynchronous programming and middleware design.
Month 2026-05: Delivered middleware-only reliability improvements for JBOF shelf attachment in truenas/middleware. Implemented two workarounds to address firmware limitations during jbof.create/jbof.update: (1) hardwire_host retry with fabric-card reset, and (2) drive-slot recovery during fabric discovery. All changes are middleware-only (no kernel, schema, or on-disk format changes) and run under hardwire_dataplane. The work was validated across multiple scenarios, including single-controller and HA configurations, with extensive 60+ add/remove iterations and controlled reboots, ensuring successful attaches and automatic reattachment. The fixes increase provisioning reliability for JBOF shelves and reduce manual intervention in edge cases, enabling automated shelf provisioning in production environments. Skills demonstrated include middleware design, retry and recovery logic, robust testing, and cross-team coordination to reproduce upstream firmware issues.
