Worked on enhancing the robustness of the gRPC observability path in the micrometer-metrics/micrometer repository, focusing on backend reliability. Addressed a critical runtime issue by implementing null-safe handling for the peerName field in the GrpcClientObservationConvention, ensuring that empty or missing values default to 'UNKNOWN' and preventing NullPointerExceptions during monitoring and tracing. This approach aligned null-safety practices across related fields, improving the consistency and quality of observability data. The contribution, delivered in Java and leveraging backend development and gRPC expertise, reduced production incidents related to instrumented peers and demonstrated careful attention to code collaboration and traceability within the project.
