
Worked on enhancing the JAX backend by enabling new operations within the Pallas fuser component in the jax-ml/jax repository. Focused on compiler design and Python, the work involved adding support for not equal and absolute value operations, broadening the range of operations handled during compilation and transformation passes. These additions were carefully registered and integrated into the fuser pipeline to ensure correct dispatch and optimization of fused kernels. By increasing the operation coverage, the changes improved the correctness and reliability of kernel fusion, laying groundwork for future performance improvements in JAX’s compilation and transformation workflows.
Month 2026-07: Delivered feature enablement for the Pallas fuser in the jax backend, adding support for not equal (ne_p) and absolute value (abs_p) operations to improve compilation/transformation coverage. Registered the additional ops within the fuser component to ensure correct handling during optimization and transformation passes. Changes are tracked in jax-ml/jax with commit 02349f8dcadbc9d3ebfb2e264062ce5b70c4925d. This work increases correctness and reliability of fused kernels, enabling broader operation coverage and paving the way for performance improvements in JAX's Pallas fuser path.
