Worked on enhancing the metadata aggregation process in the open-energy-transition/pypsa-earth repository, focusing on the robustness of handling incomplete OpenStreetMap substation data during network construction. Addressed a recurring TypeError by developing a Python-based helper function that safely merges unique, non-null substation tags, ensuring that missing or malformed data does not disrupt the pipeline. Applied this solution to both tag_substation and symbol fields, preserving network topology and clustering logic. Validated the fix through end-to-end data processing, confirming reliable generation of network files. Demonstrated strong skills in Python scripting, data processing, and error handling while improving the reliability of real-world data workflows.
May 2026: Improved robustness of metadata aggregation in pypsa-earth by introducing a safe, non-destructive handling of incomplete OSM substation data during station merging and network construction. This fix preserves topology and enhances pipeline reliability for real-world data.
