In March 2025, Michael Ward enhanced cryptographic observability in the 18F/identity-idp repository by implementing a KMS logging timestamp feature. He updated the KmsLogger to record precise timestamps for both encryption and decryption operations, improving traceability and auditability of sensitive actions. This work required modifications to ContextlessKmsClient and KmsClient, ensuring consistent logging behavior across all key management service flows. Michael expanded test coverage to validate the new timestamped logging path, supporting security and compliance requirements. Using Ruby and leveraging backend development and encryption expertise, he delivered a focused solution that enables faster incident response and strengthens audit capabilities.
