Tomo Pumi developed advanced file encoding and user interface features for the zed-industries/zed and zed-industries/extensions repositories over two months. Using Rust and TOML, Tomo engineered robust encoding detection and preservation workflows, including support for legacy encodings and improved UTF-16 handling, which reduced data loss and improved compatibility for international files. Tomo also introduced a new visual theme and enhanced encoding controls in the UI, enabling users to specify encodings, view BOM status, and customize their experience. The work demonstrated depth in buffer management, error handling, and front end development, resulting in more reliable file I/O and improved user customization.
Month: 2026-01. Delivered user-facing customization and robust encoding controls across two repos, boosting UX and data reliability. Implemented a new visual theme and advanced encoding workflows with local (non-collaborative) encoding management, plus comprehensive docs updates.

December 2025: Delivered robust cross-encoding file handling and improved UTF-16 support in Zed. Implemented automatic detection and preservation of legacy encodings on open/save, enhanced UTF-16 handling with manual encoding paths and BOM-less detection, and added binary-file detection to prevent loading binaries as text. Improved performance for the common UTF-8 path while maintaining full support for non-UTF-8 content. Fixed a critical UTF-16 saving bug to ensure correct encoding round-trips and refined encoding analysis to reduce data loss on legacy files. This work reduces user friction with legacy data and broadens compatibility for international content, delivering measurable reliability and safety gains in file I/O."
