Worked on the schism-dev/schism repository to enhance memory efficiency and data accessibility for large 3D NetCDF outputs by implementing vertical chunking. This approach allowed scalable data reading and faster visualization in downstream scientific tools by reducing unnecessary data reads and mitigating chunk size limitations. The solution introduced a configurable SCHOUT namelist switch to control vertical chunking behavior and automatically adjusted horizontal chunk dimensions to avoid exceeding NetCDF-4 file size limits. The work involved data processing, parallel computing, and scientific computing using Fortran, and included codebase modernization by removing legacy terms to improve maintainability and reduce user confusion.
Monthly summary for 2026-05 for schism-dev/schism. Focused on improving memory efficiency and data accessibility for large 3D NetCDF outputs through vertical chunking, along with configurability and codebase cleanup. This work enables scalable data reading and faster visualization in downstream tools (e.g., xarray, ParaView) by mitigating chunk size limits and unnecessary data reads.
