Worked on the ESMValCore repository to address a bug in conservative regridding for CMIP6 ICON-ESM-LR datasets. Developed a solution using Python and Iris to construct a mesh from coordinate bounds, carefully deduplicating vertices to resolve pole singularities that previously hindered robust regridding. Integrated NumPy for efficient scientific computing throughout the process. Added comprehensive integration tests to verify both mesh creation and vertex merging, ensuring the long-term stability of the regridding workflow. The work focused on data engineering challenges, emphasizing correctness and maintainability, and contributed to the reliability of climate data processing within the ESMValCore codebase.
